From Stacey Godwin:
My mother Kathryn was diagnosed with colon cancer in September of 2007. It was already stage 4 and had spread to her liver when it was found. From her family doctor she was referred immediately to MUSC doctors for treatments at Hollings Cancer Center. They started her on chemo treatments for palliative care and gave her 4 years to live. It was quite a shock and a lot to take in by myself, my father and my younger sister. That was not enough time. My mama had her ups and downs throughout the process and was trying whatever the doctors thought could work to make her keep going and be comfortable at the same time. She did undergo one major surgery for a basketball sized tumor to be removed and minor ones for other treatments.
In 2009, we were planning my wedding and she was at her best during those months leading up to it. She had lost her hair previously wearing wigs and now her hair was all grown back nice and thick. They had kept her off of the chemo some during this time to help her feel better for the wedding and because she was doing so well.
She was also gaining some weight back, looking great and seemly feeling great as well. But in the months proceeding the wedding things started going downhill. In about January of 2010, we were told the treatments were not working anymore and things were coming back. So she then went on Hospice at this time at home, which greatly helped out. Things were up and down for a while but on June 5th, 2010 she passed away.
